Search Engine Optimisation Tips Print E-mail

SEPOV is not a popular Russian name, it is an acronym for Search Engine Point of View. SEPOV is at the heart of SEO, again not an Australian biscuit but the elevator that takes your site to the top of the skyscraper that is Google - SEO is Search Engine Optimisation.

Today we're going to learn one good way to utilise your SEPOV...

Google (the Search Engine of choice for most viewers), reads your site to understand what you're on about - be it evening wear, holidays, horseback riding or designing websites. It does not read pictures, even if you've got a picture of the best horse ever - up to and including Phar Lap - on your horse riding site. Google reads words and words only. But if you want to rank up high with Google your words need to be relevant to your site.

The ways to achieve this are legion, but a simple trick is to use your SEPOV.

Binky for Search Engine Optimisation SEPOV says all words on your site matter. "Click here," is a common link on many websites. Google reads the actual words "click here" as it rates your site. Do the words "click here" help Google understand what your site's about?

Let's help Google by using text links - Google loves text links: "We offer the BEST HORSE RIDING EXPERIENCE in the Southern Hemisphere. Our EASY-TO-FIND RURAL LOCATION is handy to CAIRNS and our STABLE OF HORSES are specially trained to be gentle and slow. To make your day easy, we have the award winning HORSEBACK RESTAURANT at the FARM. We cater for all ages, with CHILDREN a specialty."*

Google will read the text on this page (and ignore the image of Binky). Note the words in capitals are:

  • a) likely words a viewer would use to find this site and
  • b) words that could link to other pages on the site

Google can follow these links, where you'll have more keywords and more links and we'll all live happily ever after.

*Caps are to show where links should go - they are not a guide to sexy web stylin'.
