Work Experience at RuttenTech

My name is Taylor Dale and for the past few days, I have been doing some work experience at Ruttentech with Rob and Joyce, and it has given me a great insight into what it is like having a job in IT, working from 9 to 5 every day. Along with this I have learnt many great skills (including the art of making a good coffee).

On my first day, Wednesday, we had a meeting and Rob told me the schedule for the next few days. Straight after, I set up an old windows computer with Ubuntu, and then installed all of the programs I would need for the next few days, like Internet browsers, FTP programs and email clients. I also learnt how powerful Linux actually - it makes creating and managing websites a lot easier. We had lunch, and then I got to work sorting out a drawer full of files.

The next day, I came into the office, and Rob and I drove up the the local ABC radio station for Robs segment , Radio Geek. I got to talk a little bit about what I do, creating games, currently with another 10 people from across the globe, and you can see a few screen-shots of some other games I've made on the post I wrote at the Radio Geek forums and you can listen to the broadcast using the payer below.

We came back and Joyce set me up a Joomla account for the project I was going to work on, the Friends of Naunehal website, a charity supporting a group called Naunehal in Pakistan. I worked mainly on putting up content, and I also learnt a bit more about Joomla's capabilities, and how to install add-ons and manage modules.

On Friday I continued to work on the Friends of Naunehal website , and once I'd finished, we purchased a domain name, and put the site up on the web. We then went out to lunch at the Naked Nut, where we ate and then I had give a speech to Rob and Joyce about all the things I'd learnt in these past few days.

I've learnt heaps of great new skills I am able to use, and this work experience will definately come in handy if I get a job creating websites. I've had a great time and I would definitely like to come back again.
